I totally agree. It’s one of the nice things about Fedora that the general packaging policy seems to be adding stuff
http://westblog.ru/?p=474
to the menues automagically with handy .desktop files

You're right, the lack of a basic (sub)menu is a substantial flaw in a distribution that aims to be useful to the uninitiated. Apart from that ubuntu does a truely great job, it's clean and consistent.

That was probably my biggest gripe too. I'm pretty new to Linux, so I skimmed through Synaptic grabbing stuff that looked interesting. I didn't realize until too late that only some of the programs got an entry added to the apps menu, so I had to figure out what I had just added so I could do it manually. I had thought it was just a mistake they were planning to fix... I'll have to look into it a bit more.

I totally agree. It's one of the nice things about Fedora that the general packaging policy seems to be adding stuff to the menues automagically with handy .desktop files. People want to use the apps they've just installed and they want to use them easily and quickly. I can see the value in keeping a core of recommended and moderated apps that don't change and are easy to get to but not adding stuff to at least a second level menu (or shipping a GUI controller to do it yourself) seems really silly.
