It looks like users will have several browser options to choose from when the Nokia 770 drops.
- The 770 ships with Opera.
- Antonio Gomes at INdT has released Manaos, a port of Minimo to the Maemo platform. He has also posted a few screenshots. This is new and exciting news. See this maemo-developers post for more information.
- GPE-Minibrowser has been ported to Maemo. GPE-Minibrowser looks lightweight but very useful.
- GTK+ WebCore is said to build on the Maemo platform. It sounds like INdT is working on a browser abstraction that would allow a browser to choose between a Geko or KHTML-based rendering.
Since web browsing is one of the core uses of the 770 it’s great to have so many varied options even before the device is available. While I expect the bundled Opera browser to be top notch, I have a lot of respect for both Gecko and KHTML, the little rendering engine that could. It’s really amazing to have so many options.
GTK+ Webcore does work for Maemo. I have packages in my webspace at handhelds.org. (there is a small issue with the gdk-pixbufs but that problem can not be investigated further as I have no N770 yet) Gpe-mini-browser works with gtk-webcore and is used in the latest gpe-snapshots as minimo has troubles building. See http://handhelds.org/~gpe/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Applications&page=3 for some more screenshots (also Maemo ones)
Well,
At this point, the MiniMo troubles building were solved. Check these out by yourself.
